Liz Truss reveals what she thinks about Piers Morgan after ‘lettuce’ clash | UK | News
Liz Truss resorted to an unprintable blast after being asked to describe Piers Morgan during an awkward quickfire grilling. During a round of questions on the latest episode of the Daily Expresso podcast, hosted by JJ Anisiobi, the former prime minister was asked to describe high-profile figures in just a few words, also including Andy Burnham, Nigel Farage and her former Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng. When Mr Morganโs name came up, Ms Truss paused before bursting into laughter. “Ermโฆ it wasnโt very polite,” she confessed. “I thought this was a family podcast, I canโt say it on air.”
Mr Anisiobi was quick to remind her of her colourful track record on the show, pointing out: “Last time you came on this show [in October 2025], you started off by saying ‘b******!'” Refusing to back down, Mrs Truss fired back: “Ok, I’ll say b****** again then.”
The blunt dismissal comes hot on the heels of repeated fiery run-ins between the former Tory leader and the veteran presenter, whose long-running feud has escalated in recent months. The two have clashed repeatedly over Truss’s disastrous 49-day tenure in No. 10 and her persistent refusal to accept blame for the economic turmoil that followed her September 2022 mini-budget.
During a bruising face-to-face clash on Mr Morgan’s own show, the interviewer skewered the former PM over her claims that an “unelected establishment” and the Bank of England sabotaged her premiership. Mr Morgan pressed her on whether she could identify a single personal flaw, to which Mrs Truss famously deflected: “Maybe I interrupt people too much, Piers.”
Mr Morgan has also frequently taunted the former prime minister over the infamous “lettuce” incident that defined the collapse of her administration. In October 2022, the Economist remarked that her political lifespan was effectively the shelf life of a salad leaf, prompting the Daily Star to launch a viral livestream pitting an iceberg lettuce fitted with a wig against her premiership.
Ms Truss announced her resignation just days later, having been comprehensively outlasted by the 60p vegetable. The joke has haunted her ever since.
When anti-government campaign group Led By Donkeys remotely unfurled a banner depicting a lettuce and the slogan “I crashed the economy” behind her during a public speaking event in 2024, she abruptly stormed off the stage, branding the prank “not funny” and blaming “far-left activists”. Mr Morgan publicly mocked the walkout, accusing the former PM of “sulking” and throwing a “strop” over what she dismissed as a “puerile joke”.
He subsequently opened an interview by cheekily asking whether she had become a “lettuce fan”.
