London to become ‘sanctuary for veterans and Londoners’ | Politics | News

For too long, Londoners have been shoved to the back of the queue for social housing while newcomers jump the line. Our own people are sleeping rough on the streets of their own capital, and shamefully, veterans who put their lives on the line for our country โ€“ who are supposedly prioritised for social housing โ€“ are pushed aside in favour of those who have just arrived. Over half of Englandโ€™s homeless are crammed into London. Around 210,000 people are stuck in temporary accommodation.

More than 13,000 were seen sleeping rough on Londonโ€™s streets last year alone. And around 1,000 of our brave veterans are homeless right here in the capital they fought to protect. Yet, nearly 20% of social housing is taken by foreign nationals. London houses the most asylum seekers in hotels in the whole country.ย

15 councils have even announced they are sanctuary boroughs for refugees. Thatโ€™s why, as our first policy for London ahead of the elections on May 7th, Reform UK is taking aim at the scourge of homelessness amongst Brits.ย

We will make London a sanctuary for veterans and Londoners โ€“ not for those who have no connection to this great city at the expense of Brits. In every London borough we win in May, weโ€™ll bring in tough, lengthy residency rules. Whilst many boroughs currently impose residency of requirements for around 3-5 years, Reform-led councils will be ensuring these are sharply increased.

Under Reform, Brits and those with deep roots to where they live will be prioritised, and we will ensure that legislation already in place to put veterans to the top of the list is finally implemented.

By voting for Reform in London on May 7th, you are voting to stop the shameful status quo of Brits being pushed to the back of the housing queue in favour of people who have only just arrived. We will put an end to the housing of asylum seekers and refugees while veterans sleep rough on the streets.

It is time that this city and this country served its people and put our heroes at the front of the queue where they belong.
