Nigel Farage breaks silence on Jim Ratcliffe – ‘everything he said was right’ | Politics | News
Mr Farage said the reference to colonisation โprobably in the dictionary definitionโ is โcorrectโ, but admitted the word has historical overtones. Sir Jim, one of Britainโs richest men, made the comments during an interview in which he raised concerns over immigration levels to the UK. The INEOS founder later said he was sorry his remarks โcaused concernโ but insisted it was important to โraise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growthโ.
Appearing on Sky News, Mr Farage pointed out Sir Jim only apologised for using the word โcolonisedโ and that most of his points were โnon-controversialโ.
โItโs just one word, everything he said was right,โ Mr Farage told the broadcaster. โOne word can be used in a different context.โ
Sir Jim faced pressure from a number of high-profile politicians, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, to apologise for the comment.
In a statement following the backlash, the multi-billionaire said: โI am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.
โMy comments were made while answering questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing in the UK.โ
He added: โMy intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone. It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK.โ
Manchester United also released its own statement soon after, saying it is an โinclusive and welcoming clubโ.
The PMโs official spokesman said it was โrightโ Sir Jim apologised for the โoffensive and wrongโ comments.
