Politicians are counting on you not to vote – here’s why you should | Politics | News
Millions of people are about to stroll past their local polling station. Many will not know there is an election on, most will shrug their shoulders and keep walking. And the politicians? They are counting on it. Because the last thing they want is for you to work out what this election is actually about. Listen to the campaign speeches and you would think you are voting to save the NHS, stop Trump’s war in Iran, or shutting the door to immigration.
Labour wants to talk about anything except the scandals in Westminster they’d caused. The Greens want to lecture you about Gaza whilst your local park looks like a rubbish tip. The Lib Dems promise to revive your high street whilst the councils they run cannot keep the lights on.
Here is what you are actually voting for tomorrow: who runs your child’s school. Who decides if new houses get built. Who determines whether your street is safe at night or a no-go zone by 10pm.
Your councillor cannot stop the boats, nor can they reform the NHS. They also cannot broker peace in the Middle East no matter how many viral protest videos they churn out.
But they can make sure your bins get emptied, your potholes get filled, and more houses get built so my generation don’t have to face the prospect of never owning their own home.
They can also make sure your elderly mum gets the social care she needs. They can even focus local investment in youth services so teenagers have somewhere to go instead of causing trouble on street corners.
These things matter, and they are entirely within the power of whoever you elect tomorrow.
So before you vote, ask one question: what will the person asking for my vote do, with the powers they actually have, to fix my street, my school, my services?
If they start banging on about Keir Starmer or the Middle East, walk away. They do not deserve your vote.
Your council cannot solve the world’s problems. But it can solve yours, if you elect people who understand the difference.
Vote for someone who knows what the job actually is.
