Drilling in the Jackdaw gas field will not bring down bills this winter, the UKโ€™s Energy Secretary has said.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland in the minutes after the decision to green-light the field was announced, Miatta Fahnbulleh was asked if people will see costs reduced this year.

โ€œNo, it wonโ€™t,โ€ she said.

โ€œI think itโ€™s important to say that upfront.

โ€œBut look, the key consideration in coming to this decision was at a time when we are in an energy crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.

โ€œEnergy security is really important and this will contribute to the homegrown sources of energy that we have.

โ€œThe project will be able to supply homes and businesses across the country this month โ€“ and thatโ€™s really critical.โ€
