Politics LIVE: Keir Starmer allies issue election warning to Labour plotters | Politics | News

Allies of Sir Keir Starmer warned Labour plotters they could force a general election if they oust him. On a chaotic day yesterday, the Prime Minister apologised to Health Secretary Wes Streeting for anonymous attacks from No 10 that he was plotting a coup.

The fallout from the apparent bid to put off potential leadership contenders has left the future of Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s long-time ally and chief of staff, at the top of government is under threat.

A source close to the PM told the Daily Mail: “In the modern age, you need your own mandate. We saw under the Tories โ€“ and even with Gordon [Brown] โ€“ that the public hate the idea that political parties can stitch up the choice of a new PM without them.

“Anyone thinking of moving against Keir should consider that very carefully.”
