Sir Keir Starmer is facing another humiliating backbench rebellion over plans to curb jury trials, as 39 MPs broke cover to urge the Prime Minister to ditch the proposals.

Only murder, rape, manslaughter and โ€œpublic interestโ€ cases will be heard by juries as part of radical proposals to slash the Crown Court backlog.

Senior legal have warned Labour is โ€œintent on removing the rights of ordinary peopleโ€ and taking an โ€œaxeโ€ to the values of โ€œBritish justice and fairnessโ€.

And dozens of MPs are plotting to bring the proposals down.

Ministry of Justice modelling suggests that the number of cases going to a jury trial will be cut in half.

Karl Turner, the MP for Hull East, has written to the Prime Minister urging him to drop the plans along with 38 other Labour backbenchers.
