Angela Rayner is planning a dramatic return to the front line of politics in time for the May local elections, it has emerged. The former Deputy Prime Minister was forced to resign after she was accused of failing to pay enough tax on an £800,000 flat in Hove, but she believes an official investigation will be resolved before the vote on May 7, according to reports today.

It would mean she is poised to strike if the elections in Wales, Scotland and English local councils are a disaster for Labour, and Sir Keir’s MPs decide their only hope is a new leader.

The development comes after she delivered a brutal speech earlier in the week, warning “the very survival of the Labour Party is at stake” and insisting “we’re running out of time” – a clear call for Labour MPs to act.

At the same time, a group of Labour activists and MPs have come together under the banner “Reset the Labour Party” to warn the party will “only survive if it chooses a different path”.
