Sir Keir Starmer’s fate will be decided in the coming hours as polls close in the by-election sparked by Andy Burnham’s desire to oust him as leader.

Thousands of people voted in the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, with the results expected in the early hours of Friday.

The race was triggered when Josh Simons MP stepped down to make way for Mr Burnham, who is set to launch a bid to replace the Labour leader in the coming days.
