POLL: Should Andy Burnham sack Rachel Reeves if he becomes PM? | Politics | News

Andy Burnham could sack Chancellor Rachel Reeves if he becomes Prime Minister following Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation – but do you think it’s a good idea? The Prime Minister resigned on Tuesday morning before Mr Burnham made his return to Westminster after winning the Makerfield by-election last week.

Sir Keir spent the weekend mulling over his political future and this morning set a timetable for his departure. It is claimed Mr Burnham would attempt to distance himself from the current Government by also removing Rachel Reeves from her post.

While Ms Reeves’ allies have insisted on keeping her as Chancellor to reassure the markets during the transition, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and former Health Secretary Wes Streeting are said to be among the contenders to replace her. So what do you think? Vote in our poll and join the debate in the comments section.

Mr Burnham is understood to be looking for a transition of about a month, which would give Sir Keir time to get his Defence Investment Plan (DIP) over the line in time for the upcoming NATO summit and sign his planned EU co-operation deal at the second annual reset summit with the bloc in July.

It is thought Mr Burnham’s camp would, however, accept a timetable that sees Sir Keir in No 10 until September.

Ms Graham said the energy secretary “only seems to be interested in one side of the equation – rushing Britain to net zero with almost no thought for jobs, skills and national security”.
