POLL: Will Nigel Farage be the next prime minister? Vote here | Politics | News

Nigel Farage has pledged โ€œthe best is yet to comeโ€ after Reform UK’s stunning local election gains. The insurgent party has won more than 1,300 councillors in Thursday’s ballots, which were a bloodbath for Labour.

And the Reform leader now insists that a majority is now possible for his party at the next general election. In a Sunday Express interview, he said: โ€œYes, it’s all about momentum and, you know, big success if used correctly leads to momentum and that is absolutely our goal, yes.โ€

He added that there is a โ€œvery good chanceโ€ of a general election taking place next year, rather than in 2029 when it is due by.

He said the traditional two-party system in Westminster had been “blown apart” in the local elections.

He said the ballots represented the โ€œcomplete breaking of the old thoughts that Left and Right in British politics are determined by classโ€.the

Reform won a swathe of seats in Labour’s Red Wall heartlands, as well as success in London with its first borough and taking Essex County Council, which is Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s local authority.

Mr Farage yesterday compared the wins to clearing Becherโ€™s Brook, a famously difficult jump in the Grand National.

He said: โ€œIf we cleared Becherโ€™s Brook and landed well, we go on to win the Grand National.

โ€œWhat is very clear to me is that our voters will stick with us now all the way through.โ€
