Rachel Reeves lashes out at Donald Trump – ‘it’s not up to him!’ | Politics | News
Rachel Reeves has lashed out at Donald Trump in the ongoing spat over Greenland. The Chancellor said the the future of the arctic territory is “not up to the US President”. Ms Reeves hit out after Mr Trump revived his claim from earlier this year that Greenland โshould be controlled by the United Statesโ. He made his remarks not long after arriving in Ankara for the annual two-day NATO summit.
โGreenland doesnโt help Denmark,” he told reporters. “Denmark doesnโt spend money to really help Greenland, but itโs an important part for the United States, and itโs surrounded by Chinaโs ships and Russian ships.” President Trump went on to admit that his previous designs on Greenland last January, where he refused to rule out using military force to take control the territory, had โhurtโ relations with NATO allies.
But speaking to reporters from London, Ms Reeves hit back saying: “The future of Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and of Denmark, and not up to the US President. I’ve been very clear about that ever since it was first suggested.”
Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Trump clashed over Greenland earlier this year.
The US President threatened to impose tariffs on European countries who oppose his demand to take control of Greenland.
But Sir Keir said he “will not yield” to pressure from Mr Trump.
