Rachel Reeves promised stability โ€“ then gave us an economic timebomb | Politics | News

Labourโ€™s cabinet ministers took a brief pause from smearing the majority of this country as โ€œracistโ€ to let slip what we all suspected: they are preparing to betray their central manifesto pledge and raise taxes on working people. The truth is, they have already broken that pledge. When Labour hiked employer National Insurance contributions, they didnโ€™t just tax businesses. They taxed every worker in Britain. Employers donโ€™t absorb those costs โ€” they pass them on in lower wages, higher prices, and fewer jobs. Itโ€™s working people who ultimately pay. Labourโ€™s promise not to touch income tax, VAT, or National Insurance has already been shredded in practice.

Now Darren Jones, one of Rachel Reevesโ€™s top lieutenants, has admitted publicly that nothing is off the table in Novemberโ€™s Budget. That means one thing: more tax rises are coming. The mess Labour has landed us in โ€” all in less than two years of government. Britain is staring down the barrel of a ยฃ20 billion fiscal black hole, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility. Government debt now swallows one in every ten pounds of public money just to service the interest.

The ONS revealed that August borrowing alone hit ยฃ18 billion, far higher than expected. Debt interest payments are exploding because of inflation-linked liabilities. Instead of tightening belts and finding efficiencies, Reeves has doubled down on spending and is preparing to raid taxpayersโ€™ pockets to cover the gap.

The only tools available are borrowing, spending cuts, or tax hikes. Borrowing will spook the markets โ€” as we all saw during Liz Trussโ€™s premiership. Spending cuts? Reeves and her Labour colleagues donโ€™t have the courage or political will to touch a tiny fraction of the welfare spend. Which leaves only one option: taxing the hardworking people of Britain yet again.

Labour has already hit the economy with ยฃ40 billion in extra taxes โ€” ยฃ25 billion of that being a direct tax on jobs through higher employer National Insurance. Yet they still insist, with a straight face, that they are honouring their manifesto pledge. Darren Jones said the pledge โ€œstands today.โ€ In plain English, that means: it will be broken tomorrow.

If things are this bad already, what will the next two years look like? How much deeper into debt will they drag us? How much more of your pay packet will they seize? How many more small businesses will they cripple with endless burdens?

Britain deserves better. We deserve a government that understands you cannot tax your way to prosperity. A government that recognises that growth comes from freeing businesses, empowering workers, and keeping more money in peopleโ€™s pockets โ€” not from raiding them with every Budget.

Labourโ€™s great tax betrayal should be a wake-up call. It proves beyond doubt that they are economically illiterate, politically dishonest, and fundamentally unfit to govern. If left unchecked, they will drag this country into an IMF bailout within a few short years.

We must not wait for that calamity to arrive. Labour promised stability but is delivering chaos. They promised to protect working people but are targeting them instead. They promised integrity but are governed by deceit.

Labour promised stability โ€” what we got is a tax trap and an economic time bomb.
