Sadiq Khan forced to change St George’s Day message | Politics | News

Sadiq Khan was forced to take hasty action after sharing a message about St George’s Day – on the wrong day. The London Mayor posted on X on Tuesday, saying: “Iโ€™ve always said Londonโ€™s diversity is our greatest strength.

“Today on St Georgeโ€™s Day Iโ€™m joined by interfaith leaders from across London. We come together to celebrate all that unites us and affirm St Georgeโ€™s Day flag as a symbol that belongs to us all.” But St George’s Day is in fact on Thursday. The mistake prompted it to be swiftly changed to say: “Ahead of St Georgeโ€™s Day I was joined by interfaith leaders from across London.

“We came together to celebrate all that unites us and affirm the flag of St George as a symbol that belongs to us all.”

A spokesman for the Mayor admitted what he described as a “typo”.

He said: โ€œThe Mayor was delighted to attend Londonโ€™s St Georgeโ€™s Day festival at Trafalgar Square on Sunday to celebrate everything that is great about England.

“The original post about the event featured a typo which was amended, and the Mayor will be proudly marking the day itself this Thursday with a video message.โ€

X user Chris Rose, who shared grabs of the post on the social media platform, commented: “Sadiq Khan has now deleted his St George’s Day post and posted a new one.

“Imagine being the Mayor of London and not knowing when St George’s Day is.”
