Sadiq Khan told to ‘wake up and get a grip’ after furious attack on Donald Trump | Politics | News

Sir Sadiq Khan was told to “wake up and get a grip” after his furious attack on Donald Trump. The London Mayor branded the US President as “racist, sexist and Islamophobic” after the Republican called him a “terrible mayor” during a speech at the United Nations.

But the Tories hit out at Sr Sadiq for his spat with Mr Trump and insisted he should focus on crime in the capital. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: โ€œSadiq Khan can call Donald Trump every name under the sun, but what he canโ€™t do is explain why knife crime is up 86% on his watch, why robberies are barely solved, or why 80,000 phones were stolen in London last year.

“Sadiq Khan should stop insulting foreign leaders to pander to his own dwindling number of supporters and start doing his own job properly.

โ€œAnd it is not hard to see why. Labour have cut 1,025 police officers in London alone and stop and search has completely collapsed.

“If people feel less safe today, itโ€™s because Keir and Sadiq drained the budget and walked away from public safety.

โ€œLabour are weak on crime, soft on criminals, and too scared to confront the reality on our streets.

“Itโ€™s time for the Labour Government and Labour Mayor to wake up and get a grip, or get out of the way.”

The long-running feud between Sir Sadiq and Mr Trump was reignited yesterday when the American leader accused the Labour politician of wanting sharia law in London.

He said: “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed.

“Now they want to go to sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that.”

Speaking today, Sir Sadiq told Sky News: “I think President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic and he is Islamophobic.”

Asked about Mr Trump’s comments that he is a “terrible mayor”, he said he was “thankful” that record numbers of Americans are coming to London.
