SNP chief Swinney vows to ban US and Israeli troops from Scotland | Politics | News

An independent Scotland would ban US and Israeli troops from the country, SNP chief John Swinney has vowed. In a swipe at the US and Israeli governments over their attacks on Iran, the First Minister said he would enshrine in the Scottish constitution a ban on foreign militaries involved in illegal conflicts abroad.

The US military regularly uses Prestwick Airport โ€“ which is owned by the Scottish Government and operated by an armโ€™s-length company โ€“ which has drawn criticism for Mr Swinney and his ministers. The war began on February 28 with a joint US-Israeli campaign against the Iranian regime.

Human rights groups have condemned the strike on a primary school in the southern city of Minab, where the death toll has risen to at least 175 people, the majority of whom were young schoolgirls.

Speaking at his partyโ€™s conference in Edinburgh on Saturday, Mr Swinney said: โ€œWe will always speak up for the protection of innocent civilians and international law.

โ€œBut as an independent country we could do more.

โ€œWe will demonstrate not just with words but with actions how Scotland can be a voice for peace.

โ€œWe will use the powers of independence to enshrine into our constitution a legally binding ban on nuclear weapons on our soil and in our seas.

โ€œAnd we will go further โ€“ with independence, we will ban any foreign military power engaged in illegal conflicts from our shores.

โ€œTwo statements will be written directly into the very foundational document of our new nation โ€“ not in our name, not in our country.โ€

Mr Swinney told delegates the action in Iran has โ€œno basis in international lawโ€, saying: โ€œRight now, once again, the world is watching as war rages in the Middle East.

โ€œWe all know the Iranian regime is brutal and illegitimate.

โ€œIt has brought untold suffering on its own citizens, and on people across the region.

โ€œBut that does not justify what we are seeing on our television screens every night.

โ€œTehran in flames, whole streets on fire, schools bombed, thousands killed.

โ€œThe Iranian regime have terrorised their own population. Now, those self-same civilians are dying at the hands of American and Israeli bombs.

โ€œSo let me be clear โ€“ the unjustifiable actions of the United States and Israel have no basis under international law.

โ€œThey must stop.

โ€œFor the sake of the innocent children of Iran, for the sake of peace, our call is for diplomacy, for de-escalation, and an end to this war.โ€
