Andy Burnham’s obsession with dragging Britain back into the orbit of Brussels is not just a tactical error, it is a profound political blunder. Having taken over as Prime Minister, he appears determined to reopen the bitter divisions of the past by attempting to reverse or unpick the historic 2016 referendum result.

But there are three clear reasons why his dangerous plan is completely wrong for Britain. First and foremost, reversing Brexit represents a fundamental assault on British democracy. More than 17.4 million people voted to unshackle our nation from EU bureaucracy in the largest democratic exercise in our history. By seeking to undo that mandate, Burnham is effectively telling voters – particularly in traditional heartlands and Red Wall seats like Makerfield – where 65% voted to Leave – that their voices do not matter.

Walking away from the referendum commitment will alienate millions of patriotic electors who expect politicians to honor democratic votes rather than surrendering national sovereignty back to Brussels bureaucrats.

Secondly, why is Burnham spending so much time worrying about Brexit at a time when hard-working British families are grappling with crippling cost-of-living pressures, high energy bills and severe strains on public services.

Instead of focusing on securing our borders, tackling illegal Channel crossings, and boosting national economic growth, Burnham is choosing to waste vital time and resources exhuming a decade-old debate.

Dragging the country through another round of Brexit wrangling distracts Whitehall from real-world priorities and threatens to lock the UK into a stagnant economic pattern.

Last but not least, rejoining or aligning tightly with Brussels’ regulatory machine risks torpedoing our crucial trade and diplomatic relationship with the United States.

President Donald Trump has consistently championed national sovereignty, independent trade deals, and robust border control, making no secret of his strong support for Brexit and nation-states over supranational blocs.

Surrendering British law-making powers back to Brussels bureaucrats will infuriate Washington, imperiling prospects for a landmark UK-US trade agreement and fracturing the Special Relationship just when global stability demands strong transatlantic unity.

Reopening the Brexit war will only create chaos, betray voters, and undermine Britain’s standing on the world stage.
