Three dead and several hurt after gunman opens fire outside a Reno casino: police say suspect in custody

Three people are dead and several are injured after a gunman opened fire outside a casino in Reno, Nevada, early Monday, before being captured.

The shooting happened at around 7:25 a.m. in the valet area and later the parking lot of the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, according to Reno police. Officers arrived at the scene within minutes of the violence and exchange fire with the shooter.

โ€‹โ€‹”I want to start with my deepest condolences to the victims and their families, as well as to our entire community,” Reno police chief Kathryn Nance said Monday at a press conference. “Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure.”

One victim died in the valet area, and another, a passing motorist, was shot in the parking lot of the casino. A third victim later perished from their injuries while being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Police shot the adult male suspect, according to Reno Police Department spokesperson Chris Johnson. A security officer also fired on the gunman.

Two victims and the shooter were in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, according to police. Another victim was treated and released.

Officials have not yet released the identities of the suspected shooter, those killed, or those injured in the shooting.

The Reno and Sparks police departments described the suspect as a white male who had โ€œmultiple firearm magazinesโ€ with him during the shooting.

Police said Monday they did not have reason to believe there was a connection between the suspect and the victims.

A motive has not been determined for the violence.

โ€œMy heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community,โ€ Devon Reese, a member of the Reno City Council, said in a social media post.

โ€œReno is strong โ€” but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation.โ€

The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting with assistance from the Washoe County Sheriffโ€™s office.

The Independent has contacted the agencies investigating the shooting for more information.

The shooting came the same day a gunman is accused of shooting and killing four people at a Manhattan office tower.
