Trump’s 4 orders to Democrats ‘responsible’ for 2 fatal ICE shootings | US | News
US President Donald Trump has unleashed a fierce attack on his Democrat rivals, claiming those in charge of “Sanctuary States” are responsible for the recent deaths among ICE protesters, with two people shot dead by ICE agents during weeks of civil unrest.
The President’s comments follow his decision to deploy large numbers of ICE agents to Minneapolis, home to the largest Somalian community in America, in a concerted effort to detain suspected illegal migrants.
Democrat politicians have hit out at Trump over his “inhuman” approach to suspected illegal migrants, alleged poor training of Federal agents, many recently hired, and what they describe as excessive force used against protesters who have taken to the streets and occasionally disrupted deportation operations.
Second fatal shooting sparks nationwide outrage
The death of a second US citizen at the weekend, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse on Saturday, less than a month after activist Renee Good was also fatally shot while protesting against immigration raids in Minneapolis, has triggered furious demonstrations and widespread criticism.
Trump has intensified his stance against opponents, holding them accountable for fostering a volatile situation in Democrat-controlled states that has resulted in the killings, drawing a stark comparison with Republican states that have carried out hundreds of thousands of deportations with significantly less disorder.
Trump issues four demandsย
The President outlined four requirements, directed specifically at Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz, which he insisted must be “enforced”:
“1. Governor Walz and Mayor Frey should turn over all Criminal Illegal Aliens that are currently incarcerated in their State Prisons and Jails to Federal Authorities, along with all Illegal Criminals with an active warrant or known Criminal History, for Immediate Deportation.
“2. State and Local Law Enforcement must agree to turn over all Illegal Aliens arrested by Local Police.
“3. Local Police must assist Federal Law Enforcement in apprehending and detaining Illegal Aliens who are wanted for Crimes.
“4. Democrat Politicians must partner with the Federal Government to protect American Citizens in the rapid removal of all Criminal Illegal Aliens in our Country. Some Democrats, in places like Memphis, Tennessee, or Washington, D.C., have done so, resulting in safer streets for ALL.”
Trump then called on the United States Congress to pass legislation immediately to “END Sanctuary Cities, which is the root cause of all of these problems. American Cities should be Safe Sanctuaries for Law Abiding American Citizens ONLY, not Illegal Alien Criminals who broke our Nation’s Laws.”
Justice Department identifies non-cooperative jurisdictions
Since last summer the US Department of Justice has identified the Democrat jurisdictions where local law enforcement cooperation with Federal ICE agents is “limited”, details on suspected illegal migrants in police custody are not passed on, such detainees are not kept beyond standard release dates due to their immigration status, and police are barred from asking about a detainee’s migration status.
On Sunday, hundreds of protesters expressed their fury over the shooting and raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), as armed and masked agents deployed tear gas and stun grenades.
In a second message posted moments after the first, Trump squarely blamed Democrats for “refusing” to cooperate with ICE and “encouraging left-wing agitators” to obstruct ICE officers in their work to deport illegal migrants.
“By doing this,” he said, “Democrats are putting Illegal Alien Criminals over Taxpaying, Law-Abiding Citizens, and they have created dangerous circumstances for EVERYONE involved.
“Tragically, two American Citizens have lost their lives as a result of this Democrat ensued chaos.”
Demonstrations have reached other US cities, including New York where people carried signs saying, “Justice for Alex” and “abolish ICE”, as well as to Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Administration labels victim ‘domestic terrorist’
The Trump administration has described Pretti as a “domestic terrorist”.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said he was there “to perpetuate violence”, saying he approached federal agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
Videos have surfaced showing a confrontation between Border Patrol agents and the man just before the shooting.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the agents fired in self-defence after Pretti resisted their attempts to disarm him.
Eyewitnesses, local officials and the victim’s family have challenged that account, pointing out he had a phone in his hand, not a weapon. His parents accused the administration of spreading “sickening lies” about what happened.
