Venezuela defeats Japan 8-5, knocks out defending WBC champion: Live updates and reaction

Venezuela had plenty of heroes tonight, but none moreso than Wilyer Abreu with his three-run home run in the sixth to give his team the lead for good. Hereโ€™s Abreu speaking to Fox Sportsโ€™ Tom Verducci postgame about his big swing:

โ€œThat was an exciting moment. I just tried to at least tie the game with a sac fly. He gave me a really good pitch to hit, I made good contact, the ball flies, and Iโ€™m very excited for this win and now in the semifinals, I hope I can do the same thing like I did today.โ€

Abreu also confirmed he made an adjustment after getting a fastball in the middle in the strike zone earlier in the at-bat and fouling it back.

โ€œWhen I saw that pitch, in my mind, I was like, โ€˜I canโ€™t miss this pitch two times in a row,โ€™ so I just tried to stay more focused and stay on that pitch and then tried to drive the ball.โ€
