Zarah Sultana mocked as party launch descends in farce yet again | Politics | News
Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana are already facing widespread mockery after their new hard-left party launch immediately descended into farce over confusion over one crucial detail. The left-wing ex-Labour duo finally launched their new party today, promising โa new kind of political party. One that belongs to you.โ
They added: โIt’s time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade unions and social movements. One that builds power in all regions and nations. One that belongs to you.” The new movement was launched with the website and branding of โYour Partyโ, prompting most to assume that was the name of the new organisation. However Ms Sultana has since clarified that โYour Partyโ is not its name, and will be decided by members at their inaugural conference.
Responding to Reform UKโs Zia Yusuf branding โYour Partyโ โone of the worst party names everโ, Ms Sultana responded: โUnlike Reform, weโre doing things differently with democracy and inclusivity at the core.
โFrom the launch to the party, conference, structures and yes – even the name! – weโre building it together. It might feel unfamiliar to you. Itโs called democracy.โ
Social media immediately began mocking the farcical nameless launch, with Labour MP Mike Reader quipping: โMembers will choose the name. I strongly recommend Votey McVote Face.โ
Minister Chris Bryant parodied Lesley Goreโs famous song: โItโs their party and theyโll cry if they want to. You would cry too if it happened to you.โ
The Mail on Sundayโs Dan Hodges noted: โDebate over new party name. 37 minutes into its launchโฆโ
Other X users compared the launch to that of Change UK, the breakaway centrist party which formed during the Brexit rows of 2019 without a name.
User Mike W-J suggested the party goes with โFruit & Nutโ, while Tony Dixon argued โJezbollah would have encapsulated their objectives better.โ
Columnist Allison Pearson suggested โBritain Lastโ, adding โThat should make it clear.โ
The initial launch of Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultanaโs new project was already farcical after Ms Sultana announced she was quitting the Labour Party to join Mr Corbyn, despite the fact he hadnโt yet confirmed plans for a new party.
There was also a reported row about whether Mr Corbyn would accept a co-leadership model, similar to the Green Party, which he rejected.
