Donald Trump will be invited to Manchester next year as the UK hosts world leaders at the G20 summit. Prime Minister Andy Burnham will welcome counterparts from the group of advanced economies to the city in November 2027. The announcement comes as the former Greater Manchester mayor is attending his first major gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Invitations will be extended to all members of the G20 – including Vladimir Putin’s Russia, despite high tensions amid the brutal invasion of Ukraine. The Prime Minister is set to personally invite Mr Trump when the two leaders have a one-to-one meeting today.

Before their first conversation, Mr Trump had suggested he knew little about Mr Burnham beyond that he was “very liberal” and the mayor of a “town”.

Speaking to reporters during his flight to the US, Mr Burnham said: “Politicians say things throughout their career, but now the important thing is to focus on the moment you are in, and I did say to the president in our first phone call, I said Mr President, Manchester isn’t ‘some town’. I said ‘this is Manchester’.

“And so yes, the right thing to do is to have a laugh about it, isn’t it, and move beyond it.”

Other G20 leaders who will be invited include China’s Xi Jinping and Argentina’s Javier Milei.

Work on hosting the summit in Manchester had begun before Mr Burnham took office.

The presidency of the G20 is currently held by America but will pass to the UK after the summit hosted by the US President at his Trump National Doral Miami golf resort in December.

The 2027 leaders’ summit will be held at the Manchester Central convention complex, a former railway station in the heart of the city.

Locations across the UK will host other G20 events as part of the year-long presidency.
