But one pub in Grimsby, operated by Leighton Power, told the local media outlet, Gi Grimsby News that the key to success this year was “great events and a great landlord”. The thirty-year-old publican operates The Empire pub in the town, which has recently reopened after he took management in 2024.

He told Gi Grimsby News: “We have rhythm to the week; Monday we have free pool, Tuesday there is darts, Thursday we have a ladies’ darts team, Friday it’s karaoke, Saturday we have a live singer at 5 o’clock, sometimes it’s 7. And then Sunday is the fun day with bingo and other things.”

He added: “You’ve got to have the right mindset, you’ve got to treat the customers well, and I’ve created an atmosphere where it’s nice, warm and cosy. I love it, and I’ve put my absolute life into it. It’s my baby. If you took me out of the equation, there wouldn’t be an Emmy. I’m the life of the soul of the place.”

He added: “The government’s handling of the pubs only deepens the chaos. Will any relief be permanent or temporary? Who will qualify? What about pubs with rooms, restaurants or mix-used premises? Silence from the Treasury helps no one.”
