A manhunt is underway after a shooting at the University of New Mexico Friday morning left one person dead and another injured.

The shooting took place at the Casas del Rio student housing complex in Albuquerque, near the cityโ€™s downtown.

The suspect remains at large and may still be on campus, according to the university. A shelter-in-place is in effect for students as police conduct a sweep in search of the suspect. Shortly after 1 p.m. EST, the university said it remains closed.

โ€œOut of an abundance of caution, UNM has closed its Albuquerque central campus. The Health Sciences Center, including all clinical,โ€ the university said in an earlier post on X.

In response to a X userโ€™s concern for those attending the orientation, UNM said, โ€œWe’re looking to ensure the safety of those on campus. NSO students have been directly communicated with, and operations like food services are currently being modified to accommodate them. We will continue to share updates here when they become available.โ€

Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and investigating. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call UNMPD at 505-277-2241.

For Fall 2024, the University of New Mexico had a total enrollment of 27,075 students across all campuses, with 23,228 enrolled at the main Albuquerque campus, according to UNM Newsroom.
