Sir Keir Starmer’s approval ratings are almost as low as Boris Johnson’s after the collapse of his premiership and a majority of Britons now want the Labour leader to resign. The Prime Minister now has an approval rating of -42%, with 54% of those polled thinking he should resign. This includes one in three (34%) of people who voted Labour last year.

The polling Opinium found Reform UK is in first place on 31% (+1 on a fortnight ago), ahead of Labour 22% (-1), the Conservatives 17% (-1), and the Liberal Democrats 12% (unchanged).

Just 67% of those who backed Labour in the general election say they would vote for the party again Twelve per cent would now choose Reform, 6% the Liberal Democrats, 6% the Green Party – and just 2% would vote for the Conservatives.

Sir Keir approval rating of -42% is a two point slip in the last fortnight. It matches Rishi Sunak’s lowest score in the wake of his decision to leave D-Day commemorations early – and is within touching distance of Mr Johnson’s -44% after his administration fell apart.

Just 41% of Labour voters approve of how he is performing while 39% disapprove.

When UK adults were asked who should replace Sir Keir, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was the top pick (13%), followed by Health Secretary Wes Streeting (5%).

One in three (33%) say Kemi Badenoch should throw in the towel as Tory leader, with 27% wanting her to stay. Among those who voted Conservative last year, 48% want her to stay in post and 29% think she should call it a day.

Shadow Housing Secretary Sir James Cleverley and Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick were tied on 8% when people were asked who should succeed Mrs Badenoch, although Sir James had slightly more positive responses.

James Crouch, head of policy and public affairs at Opinium, said: “Unpopular for all but two months of his premiership, the Prime Minister’s approval ratings are scraping historic lows, and looking passable only thanks to Liz Truss. Few expect Keir Starmer to go anywhere anytime soon, but it’s a humbling place for a leader when most of the country wants them to resign.”
