Why should we hand aid or visas to a country that wonโ€™t take back its own citizens? | Politics | News

Ruby was a little girl – just 12 years old – when Shabir Ahmed began abusing her. She was the victim of repeated gang rapes perpetrated by Ahmed and the disgusting group of Pakistani-origin men he led.

Ruby, and many girls like her, suffered years of abuse at Ahmedโ€™s hands. She was even threatened with a gun. Now 32, Ruby is still living in the area. News of Ahmedโ€™s release from prison has left her in terror for her safety.

Maggie Oliver, a former police officer who has supported Ruby for many years, said that she has never seen Ruby so โ€œangry, frightened and powerless.โ€

This case makes clearer than ever why we need to deport every single foreign criminal – with Shabir Ahmed top of the list.

These sick criminals often make human rights, modern slavery or asylum claims to stay in the UK. I honestly donโ€™t care about their supposed human rights. Thatโ€™s why we need to come out of the ECHR and ban asylum and modern slavery claims from stopping deportation.

Ahmed benefits from a loophole in the law dating back to 1971. We will table an amendment to fix that – and it will be an early test of Andy Burnham as to whether he backs this.

Then we come to whether Pakistan will take Ahmed back. Let me be clear: every county should take back their own citizens who are in the UK illegally or who commit a crime. If I were Home Secretary, I would ensure no country refusing to take back its own citizens receives a single penny or overseas aid or receives any visas for its citizens to come to the UK. Why should we hand money or entry visas to a country who wonโ€™t take back its own citizens?

Itโ€™s time to stop messing around. We need to urgently deport Shabir Ahmed – and every other foreign criminal along with him.
